Chilean prisoner cooks up escape

A prison cook is presumed to have escaped from a penitentiary south of Santiago by hiding in a food delivery van he unloaded.

After cooking the prison meal for the next day he escaped, according to prison authorities.

Roncagua Prison guard commander Jacqueline Maldonado said there were no security breaches at the facility, and said they have not ruled out collaboration from inside the facility.

She said Raul Dinamarca, the cook, signed for a load of tomatoes and potatoes delivered to the prison galley for Monday's meal, which he cooked.

But on Monday morning, Dinamarca could not be found and prison guards presume he hid inside the delivery van, under a false bottom, before it drove out of the compound.

Dinamarca, prison officials said, was convicted for a mugging and has seven more years of his sentence to serve.
