Plans have been unveiled for a €60m residential and tourism development on the shores of Lough Derg at Ballina in Co Tipperary.
The Shoreline Plan, unveiled today by Eclipse Developments, will include 85 apartments and five townhouses, berthing spaces, retail and commercial spaces, a town centre plaza and public walkways.
The company says the aim is to build a world-class marina on the shores of the lake to enhance tourism amenities.
However, local people are concerned that the development is unsuitable for the heritage towns of Killaloe and Ballina which border the lake.
They say the development will destroy the tranquil nature of the lakeside, its long-established boating tradition and cause pollution.
Drave Gaughan, a spokesperson for the Ballina Marina Action Group, said they are disappointed because despite promises of consultation with them by the developers, there has been no consultation whatsoever with local people.
