The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, has said he expects a Government decision on Tuesday over the deployment of up to 400 Irish troops in eastern Chad on a EU/UN mission.

Speaking following his four-day visit to Sudan and Chad, Mr Ahern said that when and if the Government approved the deployment of UN sanctioned troops, the Dail would also have to give its approval.

If the deployment is approved then the first of the soldiers could be on the ground in Eastern Chad by early December, with the main for due to be deployed in January.

The conflict in Darfur has already cost the lives of more than 250,000 people in the past few years and more than 2m people have been displaced in the deepening humanitarian crisis in Darfur and eastern Chad.
