Women claim majority of new jobs

Nearly 70,000 new jobs were created in the economy in the 12 months to the end of August.

The vast majority of these jobs went to women or self-employed men.

There were only 3,300 new jobs for men with women accounting for nearly ten times that figure.

The low level of new employee positions for men is the result of the slowdown in the construction industry.

More than half the new jobs created are part-time, which is a record amount.

The financial and business sector, as well as the wholesale and retail, performed well as 60% of all the new jobs created in the last year came in those sectors.
