Enniskillen victims remembered in service

Enniskillen - 11 died in IRA bomb

The 11 people killed by the Enniskillen bombing 20 years ago were remembered at a service in the town this morning.

The IRA's no-warning bomb also injured more than 60 people who had gathered for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Enniskillen Cenotaph.

The IRA attack, known as the Poppy Day bombing, was one of the worst atrocities of The Troubles.

The victims had gathered at the town's cenotaph for the traditional Remembrance Sunday wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate those who died in the two world wars.

Initially, the IRA said that scanning equipment had prematurely detonated a bomb meant for the security forces. They later changed that account and expressed deep regret for what happened.

The outrage caused by the bombing increased the pressure on the IRA to end its campaign.

This morning relatives and friends of those killed or injured in the bombing gathered at the cenotaph.

They stood in silence at the exact time the explosion took place 20 years ago.
