At least 40 people have been killed and 50 wounded in a suicide bomb blast in the northern Afghan province of Baghlan.

The bomber detonated his explosives as a political delegation was visiting the town of Pul-i-Khumri, about 150km north of Kabul.

The politicians, six of whom are understood to be among the dead, were visiting a sugar factory at the time of the blast.

A number of bodyguards and other members of the delegation were also killed.

Earlier reports had put the death toll higher, at between 90 and 100.

There were about 18 Afghan members of parliament in the delgation, which was on an official tour of the province.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying it was 'the act of the enemies of the people of Afghanistan'.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast but there have been around 120 suicide attacks in Afghanistan this year, most of them blamed on the Taliban.
