The Government has announced that up to €1 million Irish Aid emergency funding will be issued to the areas of Mexico and the Caribbean affected by severe flooding recently.

Michael Kitt TD, Minister of State for Overseas Development, has made the announcement of the funding for Mexico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region hit by Hurricane Noel.

The region has suffered some of the worst flooding in 50 years.

The floods have had a devastating impact in Mexico's Tabasco state, where some 80% of the state is now reported to be under water and 900,000 people have been made homeless.

Speaking at the announcement, Minister Kitt said the Irish Aid emergency funding would assist in international efforts to provide shelter and relief to those affected.

The aid funds will be distributed through partner relief organisations operating in the region, including the UN and Red Cross.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has pledged the full support of his government to help more than 1m people hit by floods in Tabasco state.

Mr Calderon said on a visit to Tabasco that the entire air force was involved in shifting supplies to the region where more than 800,000 are homeless.

The Grijalva River, which winds through state capital Villahermosa, swelled over its banks earlier this week after days of heavy rains.

People and livestock swam through the streets after a murky, brown deluge surged into Villahermosa, home to about half a million people.

Hungry and thirsty residents stood in long lines at supermarkets, although some stores closed after running out of food, water and medicine.

The army evacuated most of the city centre on Thursday night after a levee broke despite being piled with thousands of sandbags by army troops and volunteers.
