The HSE is recalling women from Co Laois for new breast scans after a review of the work of a consultant radiologist at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.
At least eight women, who were initially told they had no cause for concern, have now been invited to undergo new mammograms and ultrasounds.
Last September the HSE announced that thousands of scans carried out on women who attended the hospital would have to be reviewed.
The decision was taken after a consultant radiologist at the hospital was placed on administrative leave while her work was monitored.
The review involved the re-examination of all the mammograms and breast ultra sounds conducted at the hospital since November of 2003.
RTÉ News has learned that at least eight women have now been recalled for new scans arising from this process.
Minister for Health, Mary Harney, said the episode in Portlaoise indicated how important it is to quickly establish the centres of excellence where a number of doctors are involved in looking at the diagnostics.
She said it was her understanding that it was persons involved in the hospital who had brought concerns to the attention of the hospital authorities.
