Democratic candidates for next year's US presidential election have participated in a debate on Iran and the future role of the US in Iraq.

With just two months to go to the Iowa caucus, time is running out for candidates campaigning for the Democratic nomination.

Last night several candidates attacked Senator Hillary Clinton's positions on a range of issues in a clear sign that the Democratic primary race has turned a competitive corner.

Former Senator and vice-presidential candidate John Edwards accused Ms Clinton of doubletalk in backing a Senate resolution labelling Iran's Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organisation.

Mr Edwards claimed the move gave the Bush administration everything they wanted.

Ms Clinton, who is the front runner for the nomination, said she was in favour of vigorous diplomacy.

Senator Chris Dodd attacked Ms Clinton for refusing to state clearly if she supported plans by New York's Governor to give driving licences to illegal immigrants.
