IFA claims EU Brazilian beef report withheld

Beef - IFA call for report to be released

Around 30 members of the IFA staged a sit-in overnight in the Dublin offices of the European Commission demanding the immediate release of an EU report on Brazilian beef.

The IFA claims the report has being withheld for the last six months.

The action, by members of the IFA livestock committee, has been described by the EU as an 'invasion' of its information centre in Molesworth Street.

The IFA committee's chairman, John Bryan, said the failure of EU Health & Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou to release the report on the last Food and Veterinary office mission to Brazil raises serious question marks as to why the findings have been withheld for so long.

Mr Bryan said there is a widespread belief among livestock farmers that there is a cover-up regarding the double standards on Brazilian beef imports.

However, a statement from the EU yesterday evening said the report will be published in the coming weeks - following the normal procedure of seeking comments from the various parties involved.
