A new survey has claimed that more than a third of all Irishmen between the age of 25 and 44 own a hair straightener.

The gadget survey also shows laptops and the new Apple iPhone top the list of desirable Christmas presents.

The report from Discover Science and Engineering shows almost everyone has a mobile phone, more than half of those surveyed use social networking sites like Facebook or Bebo and almost 90% of people have a digital camera.

On the health and beauty front, hair straighteners are the gadgets of choice, two thirds of women have one and 36% of men aged between 25 and 44 own one.

The research also shows that 48% of those surveyed own a PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii or PSP console.

The survey also reveals some of the favoured items people use in their home for entertainment and cooking.

Some 52% of respondents own a George Foreman grill while 34% own a smoothie maker.

The survey also shows a high ownership of DVD players and 37% of people surveyed own a plasma screen TV.

The findings of the research were released ahead of Science Week Ireland, which takes place from November 11-18.

The fieldwork was carried out by iReach, using online surveys with a nationally representative sample of 324 people aged 15 and over.
