A new opinion poll shows support for the Government parties steady, despite recent controversies over the slowdown of the economy and the future of Shannon.

The Red C poll in today's Sunday Business Post also shows Fine Gael support holding firm, while Sinn Féin has gained.

In the month since the last Red C poll, there has been quite a lot of political activity.

This poll was taken on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, before the controversy over provisonal driving licences, and Government pay increases.

The Dáil came back from its long summer holiday, we had the first motion of no confidence in a Taoiseach in 14 years, and there has been controversy over crime, the economic slowdown, and questions around who knew what and when about Aer Lingus pulling out of the Shannon-Heathrow route.

But there is very little change in party support - Fianna Fáil at 39% is down one point since September - a very good performance when compared with the collapse the party suffered five years ago during a similar post-election spending squeeze.

Fine Gael will also be happy to stay on 27%, while Labour are down one to 10%.

The Greens retain their 7% support.

Sinn Féin support is up two to 8%, the PDs drop one to just 2%, and Independents and others gain one to 7%.
