The science writer and meteorologist Brendan McWilliams has died after a short illness.

The 63-year-old was best known for his Weather Eye column in the Irish Times, which he wrote for almost 20 years.

The newspaper's editor Geradline Kennedy said today he was greatly loved by readers and would be sadly missed.

Mr McWilliams joined Met Eireann in 1965 and rose to the position of Assistant Director.

He left Met Eireann to become Director of administration for European Meteorological Satellite Organisation in Germany.

There he played a role in developing Europe's weather satellites.
