Benazir Bhutto - Blames militants for the attack

Pakistani opposition politician Imran Khan has said former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has only herself to blame for the deadly suicide attack on her homecoming parade.

Mr Khan said Ms Bhutto had made herself an assassination target by striking a deal with President Pervez Musharraf which 'deliberately sabotaged the democratic process'.

He said everyone in Karachi knew there was going to be a huge crowd turning up to see her return after eight years in self-imposed exile.

He said everyone also knew that there has been a spate of suicide bombings in Pakistan lately.

Ms Bhutto, who has condemned the blasts as an attack on democracy, is visiting those injured in the blast in hospital today.

Pakistani police are questioning three people over the attack which killed 138 people.

The men were linked to a car from which an attacker threw a grenade in Karachi on Thursday night.

Investigators have also questioned seven militants in jails in Karachi for possible information on the blasts, according to police officials.

Yesterday, several hundred protestors burned tyres in the streets and pelted passing vehicles with stones for a second day in pro-Bhutto neighbourhoods.

Ms Bhutto has blamed militants for the attack and said she did not believe that the 'state or government' were involved, but sources in her party said the list included senior army officials, without elaborating.
