Preliminary post mortem results on the body of a 54-year-old woman taken from the River Lee in Cork city indicate that she drowned.

She has been named as Marion O'Leary, 54, from Gurranabraher in Co Cork.

Ms O'Leary's body was recovered near the marina by divers from the Naval Service this morning and an investigation is continuing to find out how she ended up in the water.

A search began at around 4am after reports that a woman had entered the water at the quays in the city centre.

Ms O'Leary is believed to have been homeless and was drinking with a man in the area before she went into the water.

Her body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination was carried out.

Gardaí at Anglesea Street Garda Station have appealed to anyone who was in the Albert Quay or Kennedy Quay area of Cork yesterday evening or the early hours of this morning to come forward.
