Doctors in Sligo have written to the Minister for Health, Mary Harney, appealing to her to reverse the decision on cutbacks in Sligo General Hospital.

The County Sligo General Practitioners Society expressed its dismay at the recent cuts in service in Sligo General Hospital.

The organisation said that to say that these moves will have no effect on patient care is dishonest and wrong and is insulting to the professionals involved.

It said that the medical and nursing staff, who are now being let go, had made significant inroads into orthopaedic, gynaecology and breast disease waiting lists.
