Gordon Brown - Will not call election

The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has decided not to call a general election this autumn or next year.

His spokesman announced the decision today.

Opposition leaders had challenged Mr Brown to end uncertainty over whether or not he would call an election after mounting speculation in recent weeks.

An opinion poll to be published tomorrow puts the Conservative Party ahead of Labour and suggests that an election now would have resulted in a hung parliament.
