Six units of the fire brigade are in attendance at a fire at a tyre company at Ballybane Industrial Estate in Co Galway.
The fire service says that the blaze is 'very extensive' but is under control.
Eyewitnesses say a huge pall of thick black smoke is hanging over a large area of the suburbs in the north and east of the city.
Gardaí are appealing to motorists to avoid the scene and there are reports of a number of road accidents in the area.
Two people were taken to hospital following an accident involving a motorbike and a car near the scene of the outbreak.
