Joan Burton has been elected as the new deputy leader of the Labour Party.

Ms Burton, the Labour spokesperson on Finance, defeated Limerick TD Jan O’Sullivan by 1,480 votes to 1,276.

Ms Burton said she looked forward to working with a reinvigorated Labour party in the years ahead.

Speaking after the count she said there was a strong
role for a left wing party like Labour in the Dáil promoting social provision as well as a strong economy.

Jan O'Sullivan congratulated her opponent, and said the deputy leader position was an important one, particularly in areas that did not have a Dáil representative.

All fully paid up party members of two years standing were entitled to vote in the election. Labour organisers are pleased that the result was a relatively close one and that both candidates returned a healthy vote.
