Donegal - Diver died at wreck

The body of a man who died while taking part in a dive off the coast of Donegal has been recovered.

The Dublin man, who was a father of four in his 40s, was part of a team who had descended 70m below the surface to film the wreckage of a German U-Boat.

The dive to the U778 vessel took place yesterday some 26km northwest of Malin Head.

The man's body will be brought ashore to Port Ronan Pier at Malin Head.

The divers had just finished a survey of the wreck and were preparing to make their way to the surface when the man got into difficulty.

The other members of the team went to the man’s aid but he died at the wreck.

A garda investigation is under way.

The dive was funded by Derry City Council, which hopes to raise the WWII submarine to put it on display in the city to commemorate Derry's role in the battle of the Atlantic.

The council said it was deeply saddened by the death and expressed its sympathy to the man's family.

The filming and recording of the wreck was part of a feasibility study on its recovery and exhibition to mark the role of the city in the WWII Battle of the Atlantic.

It is estimated there are more than 100 U-boat wrecks lying on the seabed off the Co Donegal coast.
