The Bishop in the Diocese of Kilmore has confirmed that a priest in the diocese has agreed to step aside from his duties pending the outcome of a garda investigation into alleged sexual abuse.
The allegations have been made by a 15-year-old boy who lives in the diocese.
The man, who is in his 40s, was arrested yesterday and questioned for several hours by gardaí in Co Cavan before being released without charge.
It is understood that a number of items were seized from two locations used by the man.
It is thought that mobile phones are among the items seized.
In a statement to RTE News this evening Bishop Leo O'Reilly urged anyone with a concern for the safety of children to come forward so that those concerns could be dealt with.
Gardaí have confirmed that an investigation is underway and say a file on the case is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
