Dublin school demand exceeds estimate

Demand for an emergency primary school in north Dublin is now more than three times than initially expected by the Department of Education.

At a meeting held last night for parents of children who will be attending the multi-denominational school in Balbriggan, it emerged that 106 children have now enrolled.

Two weeks ago the Department asked Educate Together to set up the school for what it believed were 32 children who had failed to find a school place.

Schools there say they have been warning the authorities about the impending shortage for years.

But it was only at the end of August that the Department of Education asked Educate Together to open this new school.

It was due to open next Monday but because of the huge numbers in need of places that opening has now been delayed by one week.

Last week RTÉ News revealed that almost all the children applying to the new school were of African origin.

Last night Educate Together said that while the ethnic make up was now more diverse, the school population would still be overwhelmingly the children of immigrants.

Last night's meeting was described as extremely positive.

Discussion centred on normal concerns - school books, uniforms and parking.
