Air accident investigators have arrived at the scene of a helicopter crash near Clara, Co Offaly, in which two men were injured.

The two-seater aircraft crashed near the village of Ballycumber, 6km from Clara, at around 4.30pm this evening.

Two men who were flying in the helicopter were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A provisional inspection of the crash site will be carried out this evening and tomorrow the helicopter will be removed from the site and taken to a facility at Gormanston, Co Meath, where a detailed examination will take place.

One of the men on board is a local man and the accident occurred a short distance from his home.

It is thought he had been renting the UK registered helicopter from a firm in Northern Ireland.
