A man in his 60s died in a road accident on the M1 north of the Boyne Bridge this morning.

It is believed that the man, who was driving a heavy goods vehicle, became seriously ill and his truck swerved through the barrier in the middle of the motorway and crossed into the opposite carriageway. The incident occurred at 11.45am.

The man was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was pronounced dead.

Diversions were in place on the M1, but they have now been lifted.

Gardaí in Drogheda are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them.
