President Mary McAleese is to pay her first official visit to the island of Jersey next week.

She is scheduled to meet senior state officials and members of the Irish community during her visits to the island and its sister isle, Guernsey, on Friday and Saturday.

Jersey and Guernsey are both members of the British Irish Council along with the British and Irish Governments and the devolved administrations of Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man.

The BIC, which was set up under the Good Friday Agreement, meets regularly to promote positive relations between the states.

Mrs McAleese will attend a reception hosted by the Irish community in St Helier on Friday.

She will later be guest of honour at a dinner hosted by the Bailiff of Jersey, Sir Philip Bailhache.

The president will also meet the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway.

In Guernsey, a visit to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church is scheduled.

The president will also be guest of honour at a reception hosted by the Irish community on the tiny island.
