Queen's University, Belfast - New scholarship scheme

Queen's University in Belfast has announced it is to offer a bursary of £1,000 to all top-class students who enrol in traditional science and engineering degree courses.

The new scholarship scheme, the first of its kind in the UK, is being established in an effort to halt decades of decline in subjects critical to economic growth.

The cash awards will be offered from 2008 to students achieving three As at A-level and enrolling on a science technology, engineering or mathematics subject.

The Vice Chancellor at Queen's, Professor Peter Gregson, said 'we are operating in a knowledge economy, and it is crucial to produce graduates with the right blend of know-how, expertise and innovation to ensure future economic prosperity'.

Nigel Smyth, director of the CBI Northern Ireland, commended the university for its pioneering and far-sighted scheme which he said would serve as a role model for others.
