Eamon Gilmore - Closing date for nominations on Thursday

The only declared candidate for the leadership of the Labour Party has said he has not heard of any other nomination for the post.

Speaking RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland, Labour Spokesperson on Environment and Local Government Eamon Gilmore said the closing date for nominations is Thursday and it was impossible to say who would become leader until then.

He said if it turned out that he was the only candidate on Thursday, it would be his first achievement to have an agreed leader, a united party and a very strong team.

Mr Gilmore said his plan was to lead the Labour Party his way. He said his first job as leader would be to maximise the party’s potential.

Meanwhile the Labour Party TD for Cork South-Central, Ciaran Lynch, has said he will not contest the deputy leadership of his party.

Deputy Lynch, who was first elected to the Dáil last May, had indicated that he was considering putting his name forward for the position.

In a statement, he said it had taken the Labour Party 10 years to regain a seat in Cork South-Central and he believed his energy would be best employed in re-building the party in the constituency.
