Grain farmers set for best harvest in decades

Harvest - Prices to farmers expected to increase

Despite the summer weather, grain growers are going to have one of their best ever harvests.

Over 80% of the main wheat and barley crops are now in and farmers say they are generally happy with the outcome.

Only two weeks ago, Teagasc was warning that if the weather did not improve, grain growers were facing a salvage situation with 25% being knocked off the value of the harvest.

But over the past fortnight the sun came out, field conditions improved, and now farmers are set to have one of their best harvests for decades and prices to farmers are up 50% on last year.

Cereal prices have risen so significantly because of increased demand, and because of shortages caused by a switchover to biofuels, and by drought elsewhere.

For consumers this means that prices of products with grain, such as beer and bread, are increasing, but farmers say it is the manufacturers that are raising the prices too steeply.
