Protest over plans for former PSNI site

West Belfast residents are protesting plans for a six-storey apartment block on the former site of Andersonstown police station.

Campaigners plan to demonstrate outside the Department for Social Development's Belfast city centre headquarters to oppose plans for a apartment building at the site of the demolished barracks.

The DSD has appointed the Carvill Group as preferred developer to build 30 flats, several shops and a community facility.

Local residents want the site put aside for community projects and not for housing and retail.

The station closed in January 2005 and the site was then sold for development.

The Carvill Group, the appointed developer, says the plans include an extensive 420sq.m space specifically for use by the local community at a nominal rent.
