Thaksin Shinawatra - Ousted in bloodless coup

Thailand's military-appointed government will stage a general election on 23 December, 15 months after Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in a bloodless coup.

The development was announced today by the Election Commission.

The announcement came a week after Thailand's first public referendum approved a new constitution.

The constitution is designed to prevent the re-emergence of a powerful single party government like Mr Shinawatra's.
