'Mooning' student freed on bail in Senegal

An Irish student arrested for allegedly dropping his trousers in Senegal has been released on bail pending his trial next week.

Patrick Devine, 19, has been in prison since 27 July after dropping his trousers and 'mooning' opposite a local governor's home as part of a dare.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed today that Mr Devine has been granted bail by the court of appeal in Dakar.

It is understood that no conditions have been imposed and Mr Devine may be able to travel home to Ireland and return to Senegal next week for his trial.

The Queen's University engineering student had been working over the summer as a volunteer helping street children with the Teaching and Projects Abroad organisation.

It is understood he pulled the stunt as part of a series of dares suggested by members of the group when he was spotted by a local man.

The man restrained the student until police arrived and after several days in police cells he was moved to La Maison de la Correction where he reportedly shared a cell with 40 other prisoners.

It is understood that members of Mr Devine's family travelled to Senegal where they have been visiting him in prison.
