Fianna Fáil split warning over Shannon row

The leader of the Fianna Fáíl group of councillors in Co Clare has warned the Taoiseach about a potential split in the party over the Air Lingus row in Shannon.

Councillor P J Kelly said that the Taoiseach and his advisors needed to re-establish the party's values.

He was responding to a memo issued by the party to its members in the west. The memo outlined Fianna Fáíl's reasons for not getting involved in the controversy over Aer Lingus’s decision to pull its Shannon/ Heathrow service.

Councillor Kelly claimed the Memo was nothing more than a diversion tactic and an attempt to confuse the issue.

He said the Government has not picked up on the anger in the West or the anger from its party members, and that it is up to the Taoiseach to make the necessary value adjustments to 'contain' the situation.

Referring back to 1993, when Fianna Fáil councillors in Co Clare resigned over issues concerning Shannon Airport, he said a meeting of Fianna Fáil councilors from the West is being planned for two weeks time.

They will discuss the Government response to Aer Lingus and other issues frustrating councillors in the West.

While not willing to elaborate on what action they will take he said that councillors are not going to settle for less than what they had.
