Fall in days lost to industrial disputes

The number of days lost due to industrial disputes fell sharply in the three months from April to June with no dispute starting in that time.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that only one dispute carried over, affecting 300 workers at a manufacturing firm who staged a one-day strike.

In the same three months last year there had been 1,801 days lost to industrial disputes involving four firms.

In the first six months of 2007 three disputes began, involving three firms and a total of 2,097 days lost with 57% in manufacturing sector and nearly 40% in the public sector.

This compares to six disputes in the first six months of last year when 5,208 days were lost, in actions involving 684 workers.
