Understanding of the English language appears to be one of the biggest barriers to the integration of foreign nationals into Irish society, according to a new study.

Research conducted as part of the Anti-Racism and Diversity Plan saw a mixed response from focus groups made up of 81 people from 23 different countries.

The English language presented a significant barrier for many with problems of both basic understanding and misinterpretation of expression.

Interaction with authorities was also cited as a problem with some of those surveyed saying they are distrustful of authority in Ireland, avoiding it where possible.

Respondents said that issues also persist in the accommodation and employment areas where nationality may have a negative impact.

Lucy Gaffney, Chair of the National Action Plan Against Racism Steering Committee, says barriers to integration, whether they are language, cultural misunderstandings, fear or shyness, must be removed.

She said that Irish society has a very clear responsibility to assist new citizens and make them welcome.
