Newquay - Hotel destroyed by fire

Human remains are believed to have been found in the rubble of a Cornish seaside hotel destroyed by fire.

Two people are still missing and believed to have died in the fire that gutted the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay early on Saturday.

Devon and Cornwall police said today they would treat the fire at the hotel as a major crime until they found evidence to the contrary.

A 43-year-old man died after trying to escape the flames by jumping from a window of the 54-room hotel. Four others were taken to hospital. One was in a critical condition but the others are now said to be stable.

Fire investigators and detectives are still to comb the burnt out shell of the four-storey hotel for clues as to how the fire started.

Police said it was being treated as a major crime scene until evidence to the contrary emerged.

A burglary was reported at the hotel on Saturday night, hours before the fire took hold, but it was not clear whether the two events were linked and police have refused to say whether the cause of the fire was arson.

Many of those who escaped were elderly holidaymakers.
