A bridge in China has collapsed, leaving at least 22 people dead and a further 39 missing.

The 268m bridge, which was being constructed over the Tuo river in Hunan province, crumbled yesterday as workers were removing steel scaffolding.

There were 56 workers on top of the bridge when it collapsed and several others had been working underneath.

The bridge rumbled into the river, leaving a long stretch of huge concrete chunks resting on a bed of shattered rubble.

The Chinese work safety administration has not given a reason for the collapse.

The incident came as the Chinese government announced plans to fix or rebuild about 6,300 damaged or badly constructed bridges across the country by 2010.
