Two of Dublin's landmark hotels, Jury's Ballsbridge and the Berkeley Court, closed their doors today.

The sites in Dublin 4 will be redeveloped for apartments and commercial units.

The contents of both hotels will be auctioned on Friday.

Almost 600 staff have accepted a redundancy offer of seven weeks pay per year of service from the Jurys Doyle group.

The sale of the five acre Ballsbridge site to developer Sean Dunne was thought to be the highest price ever offered for a piece of property in Ireland when it was announced in 2005.

He paid some €50m an acre for the site.
