Georgia - Claim Russian missile was dumped
Georgia - Claim Russian missile was dumped

A Georgian official has said that the missile which landed in the state on Monday was ditched and not fired by a Russian jet as it fled Georgian airspace.

The missile landed but did not explode in a farmer's field about 65km west of Tbilisi, sparking tensions between Georgia and Russia.

Georgia initially said the missile had been fired by Russian jets but today said the Russian pilot dumped the missile after coming under fire from separatist forces in South Ossetia in an apparent mix up.

Russia continues to deny any involvement in the incident and the US and the EU have both appealed for the two sides to show restraint.

In Washington, US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said the US had spoken to both sides and was analysing who might be responsible for the incident.

The EU also called for restraint, with a spokeswoman for the European Commission saying the full facts of the missile incident are not yet known.

Georgia is also to ask the UN Security Council to meet in emergency session on the alleged 'bombing'.

Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili said he wanted the council to consider the recent incident.
