A Limerick based cancer specialist, Professor Rajnish Gupta, who is treating the woman at the centre of the latest breast cancer misdiagnosis case has said he is 'extremely disappointed, sad and angry at what has happened to her'.
The woman from the Mid-West region was initially given two erroneous test results by the University College Hospital Galway laboratory. They suggested she did not have the disease which led to her treatment being delayed by 18 months.
Professor Gupta, the Regional Director of Cancer Services in the Mid-West, said the lack of funding and restrictions on staff recruitment is hindering the development of vitally important cancer care in Limerick.
He said the woman was going through a difficult ordeal.
An independent review has been commissioned into pathology services at the hospital which is being conducted by the Health Information and Quality Authority.
Last night, Minister for Health Mary Harney apologised to a woman and her family for the distress and trauma caused by the misdiagnosis.
