Six workers are missing after a tunnel collapsed at a coal mine in a remote part of the western state of Utah following a nearby earthquake.

An official from Emery County sheriff's office confirmed that six men are unaccounted for following the accident at the Genwal Mine in Huntington Canyon, around 192km southeast of Salt Lake City.

The cave-in occurred around 10am Irish time, around one hour after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck less than 32km away.

Sheriff's officials were not able to provide information on the numbers of workers underground at the time of the collapse.

Genwal mine produces coal for local utility Rocky Mountain power, who have sent rescue crews to the mine according to local reports.
