At least 22 people have drowned in India after their boat sank in a swollen river.

They are the latest victims of flooding in south Asia, which has forced millions to live in tents and on embankments and motorways.

The vessel sank in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A dozen children are among the dead. They were aboard the boat when it broke apart and sank in a fast-flowing river.

The monsoon flooding in the densely populated region, which is crisscrossed by large rivers, has affected more than 10m people, many of whom have been marooned in villages for over a week.

It has also damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes.

In the east of India, some marooned residents have taken to fishing in floodwaters to feed their families.

Across impoverished provinces of Bihar and Assam, around 5.5m people have been affected by the flooding. Tens of thousands of plastic and tarpaulin tents have sprung up in the region.

In neighboring Bangladesh, at least 35 people have died in the past week and more than 4.5m people have been stranded, displaced or are living in water-logged areas.

Nearly 19,000 houses have been destroyed and another 236,000 damaged by rains and floodwaters in the region.

Hundreds of thousands of homeless have crammed into some 600 relief camps, including school buildings and government offices.

The latest flooding in south Asia follows storms, floods and landslides in Pakistan, Nepal and other parts of India over the past five weeks, which left hundreds dead and tens of thousands homeless.
