Lodgement probed two years ago

Mahon Tribunal - Heard about Ahern payments

The Mahon Tribunal has heard how Taoiseach Bertie Ahern initially failed to reveal sterling lodgements when questioned about his bank accounts.

Tribunal counsel, Des O'Neill SC, described how a statement made by Mr Ahern last year contradicted evidence given in private interview one year later.

Mr Ahern first revealed last April that two lodgements resulted from sterling conversions.

AIB official Jim McNamara was first questioned by the Tribunal concerning lodgements to Bertie Ahern's account two years ago.

And the inquiry heard today that he conducted inquiries on behalf of Mr Ahern at the same time that involved investigation of foreign exchange transactions.

But when AIB O'Connell St finished their investigation on behalf of the Tribunal they said the lodgements in question were in Irish money.

Mr McNamara said at the time of the reply he did not make the connection with the earlier investigation into foreign exchange records

Mr O'Neill referred to a lodgement of over £19,000 in December 1995

Mr Ahern initially claimed this was left over from a fit out of his rented home in Drumcondra and returned to him by his then partner Celia Larkin

Last April he said the money was the result of a sterling purchase at AIB O'Connell Street.

The Tribunal's morning sitting was postponed for a second time this week due to the illness of key witness Tom Gilmartin.

The 73-year-old former developer was also unable to attend on Tuesday morning and stated yesterday during cross examination that this had been due to a drop in blood pressure.

Mr Gilmartin is currently being cross-examined by council for rival developer Owen O'Callaghan about his claims of corruption concerning west Dublin's' Quarryvale development.
