Five Senators have been elected to Seanad Éireann as the counting of votes continues in Leinster House.

Fianna Fáil's Ann Ormonde and Labhras O'Murchu, Former Fianna Fáil TD Cecilia Keaveney, Labour's Alex White and former Fine Gael TD Dr Liam Toomey have all been elected to the Education and Cultural panel this evening.

FF said retaining their three seats on the Education and Cultural panel was a good result against the run of play.

However, long time Senator Paschal Mooney has lost his seat.

Meanwhile counting of the votes to fill the Agriculture panel is now underway.

Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty and the Labour Party's Alan Kelly look set to take seats. Both men have passed the quota but as yet have not officially been declared elected.

Fianna Fáil is hoping to avoid losing its majority in the upper House.

The long count is set to continue until Friday when the fate of the 149 candidates will be known.

They are vying to win one of the 49 available seats.
