An Bord Pleanála has refused permission for a major new biomass combined heat and power plant in Co Monaghan.
An application for the €75m project, described by critics as an incinerator, at Killycarran near Emyvale in north Monaghan was previously refused by Monaghan County Council.
However, the decision was appealed by the company involved, Monopower Limited, despite petitions opposing the plant by several local residents.
The company has said it is likely today's decision will be challenged in the High Court.
