At least 10 people have been killed and 35 wounded in an explosion in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

The blast occurred at a stage set up for a rally by the country's suspended chief justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Police said the explosion occurred as hundreds gathered ahead of the address, although Mr Chaudhry had not yet arrived.

The Pakistani Supreme Court is expected to announce its decision in the coming days on whether to allow the suspension of Mr Chaudhry. President Pervez Musharraf ordered the suspension on 9 March.

Chief Justice Chaudhry's supporters claim he was ousted because he may have stood in the way of Mr Musharraf's bid to be re-elected president while also staying on as army chief, in defiance of the constitution.

Pakistan has seen a surge in violence since government forces stormed Islamabad's Lal Masjid compound earlier this month, ending a week-long siege.
