Nikki Pelley - Gave evidence at O'Reilly trial

The woman with whom Joe O'Reilly has admitted to having an affair has taken the stand at his trial for the murder of his wife.

Nikki Pelley, from Rathfarnham in Dublin, told the Central Criminal Court that she and Joe had discussed being together permanently.

Joe O'Reilly is pleading not guilty to the murder of his wife Rachel, who was found dead in her home in The Naul, Co Dublin on 4 October 2004.

Ms Pelley told the court that on the night Mr O'Reilly appeared on RTÉ television's The Late Late Show to appeal to his wife's killer to come forward, he later stayed overnight at her home in Rathfarnham.

Mr O'Reilly appeared on the Late Late with his mother-in-law Rose Callelly on 22 October 2004.

Earlier, Ms Pelley told the court that she had met Joe O'Reilly, whom she had worked with, in January of 2004 at the Barge Pub in Portobello.

They began texting and e-mailing each other and by April or May 2004 they had begun a sexual relationship.

She said he would stay at her house in Rathfarnham two or three evenings a week.

Asked if she had ever stayed at the O'Reilly home in The Naul she said she had, on one occasion, when Rachel O'Reilly was away.

When first interviewed as a witness by gardaí she told them she was just having an affair with Joe O'Reilly.

She said he told her he had told the gardaí the same thing.

When asked why she thought Joe O'Reilly had told her to tell gardaí that they were only having an affair and not a relationship, Ms Pelly said this was 'because if it was a relationship it would give him a motive to kill Rachel'.

Evidence was also heard about messages sent from Joe O'Reilly to both his wife and Nikki Pelley.

Details were heard about a series of texts sent to Ms Pelly in which he told her he loved her and missed her.

Details also emerged in court this afternoon about messages left on Rachel O'Reilly's mobile phone on the day of the murder.

In a message left by Joe O'Reilly at 1.25pm on 4 October, he said: 'I'm now really, really, really worried about you. This is not funny. I'm actually very worried.'

The message was left after Mr O'Reilly had tried to contact Rachel a number of times.

More than 15 minutes later he left another message on his wife's phone.

The trial is continuing.
