Former developer Tom Gilmartin has denied that his evidence to the Mahon Tribunal has been a 'malevolent cocktail of lies' motivated by bitterness and jealously.

Cross examined by counsel for Cork developer Owen O'Callaghan, Mr Gilmartin pointed out the tribunal had uncovered evidence to back up his allegations of corruption in the planning process.

Paul Sreenan SC put it to Tom Gilmartin that his allegations against Mr O'Callaghan have grown more dramatic by the day.

He said Mr Gilmartin had made headline grabbing claims about Mr O'Callaghan falling out of a broom cupboard, carrying a shotgun in the boot of his car and going into the Taoiseach's bedroom at 3am to hand over money.

Mr Sreenan also quoted other witnesses who had described Mr Gilmartin as 'paranoid' and 'irrational'.

He quoted Mr Gilmartin's own testimony when he said his family did not want him to get involved with the tribunal because he would 'make a spectacle of himself'.

Mr Gilmartin replied that when he had made allegations about Frank Dunlop, Liam Lawlor and George Redmond he was described as a Walter Mitty or someone out of Myles na gCopaleen.

He asked Mr O'Callaghan's counsel what did the tribunal now think of allegations once described as outrageous lies.
