Irish fish farmers have called for immediate Government action to protect areas where shellfish grow from water pollution.
It follows a European Court decision in favour of the Irish Shellfish Association's claim that the Government has failed to implement proper protection systems.
The association had made a complaint to the European Commission. Ireland was held to be in breach of requirements to protect 14 designated shellfish growing areas from water pollution and also failing to designate another 60 areas for protection.
The Government has now written to the association about the issue.
Concern has also been expressed about re-zoning proposals by Galway County and City Council around the world-famous Clarenbridge Oyster Fishery.
Galway County Council says no final decisions on development have been taken.
Oyster growers say they are not against development, but the beds must be protected.
