A murder investigation is underway following the death of a 37-year-old man six months after he was injured in an assault.

Anthony Byrne, who was originally from Drimnagh, was attacked and assaulted by a group of men at Mercer Street Upper on 18 January and died last Monday from his injuries.

Gardaí say he was attacked and severely assaulted just after he left the Mercer Street flats complex. He was later taken to St James's Hospital where he was being treated since the attack.

A number of people were arrested and interviewed following the attack. A file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have asked anyone with information to contact them on 01-666 9500 or 1800-666 111.

In particular they would like to speak to taxi drivers who may have been working in the area at the time.
