Workers at Bord na Móna are set to lodge a loss of income claim with the company for almost €2.25m as a result of break down at two of the ESB's newest power stations in the country.
The SIPTU trade union, which represents hundreds of bog workers in the midlands, is meeting with management of Bord na Móna on Wednesday to discuss the claim.
The claim has arisen after a steep drop in salaries over the last two years by 100 staff members who would normally be producing peat for the new west Offaly and Lough Ree power plants.
The secretary of the Bord na Móna group of unions, John Kane, said today that because of the closures many workers incomes have now fallen below the tax threshold for the first time.
